Pharmacy Tech III - 40 hrs/wk, 1st shift

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

To assist the pharmacist in performing the routine daily activities of the pharmacy department.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duty 1: Assists the pharmacist, under their direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with local, state, federal and hospital regulations. Answers phone and screens calls for pharmacist. Greets all customers and provides excellent customer service at all times.
  • Duty 2: Gathers accurate and complete demographic information during the initial contact with the patient, including, but not limited to, name, address, phone number, birthdate, allergy information, any pertinent disease state information, insurance information. Creates and updates patient’s health and insurance information in the computer.
  • Duty 3: Entering prescriptions: Enters prescriptions into the computer system. Notifies pharmacist of any DUR information. Communicates and trouble shoots with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
  • Duty 4: Filling prescriptions: Fills bottles with prescribed medications. Performs simple compounding as needed. Reconstitutes accurately. Affixes label accurately and neatly including any cautionary labels at the discretion of the pharmacist. Files prescriptions that have been filled. Maintains a neat and organized work area.
  • Duty 5: Is capable of performing patient medication histories using the appropriate scripting developed by the pharmacy leadership team.  Asks appropriate questions of the patient to develop the most accurate medication list possible.
  • Duty 6: Utilizes all tools available to develop the most accurate medication list possible.  These tools include but are not limited to prescription claims data, consultation with outside pharmacies, physician offices, and other health care settings, and previous health care records.
  • Duty 7:  Able to perform all functions related to our drug diversion prevention program including OARRS reporting.
  • Duty 8: Works collaboratively with the pharmacists and acts under their guidance on all clinical related activities.
  • Duty 9:  Able to perform all prescription delivery functions including billing, signature capture, and medication security.
  • Duty 10: At point of sale, verifies that customer receives correct prescriptions. Double checks the need for any further counseling – assures that all patient’s questions have been answered. Performs all duties associated with payment of prescriptions, including all functions of cash register. Performs all duties mandated by law concerning HIPPA and maintains verification of such processes. Consults pharmacist for any information/counseling requested by the patient concerning drug therapy.
  • Duty 11: Maintains the integrity and security of medications throughout the pharmacy. Routinely checks for outdated products. Maintains proper storage of medications. Follows all regulations preventing the diversion of medications. Maintains knowledge of loss prevention techniques.
  • Duty 12: Supports fellow staff members. Maintains a positive attitude regardless of work flow. Follows through on problem resolution to the satisfaction of all involved. Promotes good relations between all pharmacy staff members. Maintains a professional attitude when dealing with other healthcare professionals, patients, etc. Always provides upward support of leadership within the organization. Maintains an awareness of developments within the community and pharmaceutical fields that relate to job responsibilities and integrates them into practice. Assists in the training of new employees.
  • Duty 13:  Safely delivers orders to patients’ homes, obeying all traffic laws and maintaining compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Duty 14: Maintains pharmacy certification by completing the necessary CEU's required. Is willing to take on extra projects.
  • Duty 15: Completes additional tasks as approved by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and in accordance with Blanchard Valley Health System policy COMRX-37 Community Pharmacy Technician Tiers

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate with demonstrated Math/Science skills
  • Credentialed as Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPT) with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy
  • 1 year experience as a community pharmacy technician
  • 6 months experience with Blanchard Valley Health System community pharmacies
  • Ability to enter outpatient pharmacy prescriptions into the current computer system
  • A valid driver's license is required (if you do not have a valid Ohio driver’s license you must obtain one within 30 days of your residency in the state).  You must also meet BVHS's company fleet policy and insurance company requirements, and any other requirements that may be required to operate a vehicle.
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to respect confidentiality of all patient data
  • Understanding of medical terminology and calculations
  • Ability to correctly bill for medications
  • Typing and computer skills
  • Ability to perform short jobs and repetitive activities with accuracy
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, stand and walk a moderate amount. Some exposure to heat, cold, possible bodily injury and toxic substances.
  • Visual acuity required.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on his/her assigned unit/department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status.  Must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the area’s policies and procedures

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of computer operations, insurance and third-party payment systems
  • Knowledge of medication brand and generic names
  • 2 years of experience as a pharmacy technician

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting and standing. The associate must be able to stand for five hours, walk for two hours and sit for one hour per day. The individual must be able to lift up to 35 pounds. The associate must have corrected vision and hearing in the normal range. The individual must have excellent eye-hand coordination and reach work above their shoulders. Associate must have excellent verbal communication skills. Also requires exposure to heat, cold, possible bodily injury and other toxic substances.
